Our grain of sand to a Net Zero society

Xella has started an ambitious ESG journey and URSA has jumped on this train. Among our commitments, URSA MW insulation solutions will incorporate up to 80 % recycled materials in their manufacturing, besides other concrete and tangible objectives for occupational safety, diversity, and corporate social responsibility.

Our grain of sand to a Net Zero society

What is an ESG program? The ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) defines lines of work that will tackle relevant policies of the company in the coming years to meet today's challenges for tomorrow's future. This initiative is part of the global plan of our parent company Xella, which will seek excellence in sustainability by adding the efforts of each of the group divisions. Therefore, URSA is also setting an ambitious ESG agenda until 2030 to further improve our environmental and social contribution to sustainability and circular economy.

URSA commitment to reducing our emissions by 30 percent by 2030 ESG strategy table

On the Environmental commitment, the first challenge will be a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions. This decrease will be possible thanks to initiatives on several fronts: from the use of more efficient machinery, the optimization of processes, the use of photovoltaic cells, cogeneration measures, use of cleaner energy sources, and many small actions in the whole company.

One main focus area is the circular economy. We will increase both internal and external recycling materials in our products. The goal is that in 2030 all the mineral wool manufactured at URSA will have more than 80% recycled material and in the case of XPS, the percentage will be 100% recycled material.

The second front is the recovery of customers´ left-overs on-site so that non-installed trimmings and left-overs can return to the production site. We are already carrying out some pilot experiences in the field of left-over recovery and studying its logistic, technical, environmental, and economic impact. There is a goal to take back some thousands of tons of glass mineral wool and XPS until 2030.

Insulation can achieve a reduction in energy consumption between 50% and 80%. We are part of an industry that, by its own activity of producing and selling thermal insulation products, is already improving our homes, our cities, and, ultimately, contributing to a more sustainable society.

The Social factor of the ESG aims to improve workers' health and safety conditions.

Xella's ambitious goal is reducing accidents with an eye to a zero-workplace accident scenario, committing to a 40% decrease in the frequency rate between accidents, measured by the LTI-FR (Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate) to 2025. Training employees for the new sustainability is another of the goals with an increase of more than 10% as well as URSA understands the need to increase our specialists on energy efficiency to our teams to speed up the transformation into a more sustainable company. Diversity in the workplace is another of the targets of this ESG program with a special emphasis on increasing the number of women up to 25% in management positions in a sector long dominated by men leadership.

Lastly, on the Governance Part and in line with the objective of transparency, URSA will require our relevant suppliers to comply 100% with the Code of Conduct by 2021 as well as zero tolerance towards fraud or anti-competitive activities. We are aware that our customer experience and satisfaction is vital for our company helping us to achieve excellence to become an industry-leader in the insulation and construction sector.
